The person underneath the competence

You can be successful and still be struggling.

People know you as capable. Decisive. Reliable. The person who fixes things for everybody else, usually before they've finished asking.

They may not know about the marriage that is quietly falling apart. The argument you keep having. The affair. The cocaine use you're increasingly worried about. The anxiety you can't explain to anyone, least of all yourself. The sex you're not having. The loneliness that sits underneath a full calendar. The decisions you keep postponing.

Or the uncomfortable feeling that, despite everything you have achieved, something isn't right.

Competence is not the same as being well. I work with the person underneath it.

How I work

I won't simply sit back and ask how that makes you feel.

My style is engaged rather than passive. I'll ask direct questions, and I'll notice the contradiction between what you say you want and what you keep doing. I'll help you name emotions and needs that have gone unexamined for a long time, and trace the patterns underneath them.

But insight is not the finish line. Understanding why you do something is only useful if it changes what you decide to do next. The work is designed to end somewhere practical.

Directness and compassion are not opposites. You should expect challenge, accountability and a complete absence of judgement — including about the things you have been rehearsing how to say.

Online by design

Private psychotherapy. Wherever you are.

My practice is exclusively online, by choice. After the pandemic I kept it that way because I think it is where serious private psychotherapy is going — not because it is convenient, but because it is better suited to the lives my clients actually lead.

For clients who are professionally visible, the discretion matters. No waiting room, no reception desk, no chance encounter in a corridor.

  • Privacy and discretion
  • Flexibility around demanding schedules
  • Continuity while travelling
  • No waiting rooms, no commuting
  • Speaking from your own private environment
  • International work where legally permitted

You don't need to have everything figured out before you ask for help.

Send a short request. I read every one personally. Requests are reviewed for availability, suitability and jurisdiction, and I'll reply either way.
